Since 2011, JPH Skull Art has attempted to utilize and design works of art with various animal skulls and bones. It is our way of honoring and preserving the existence of the animal. The creation of art from animal skulls supports the ancient Calavera beliefs and traditions that no part of these sacred animals should go to waste but, rather we should cherish every single thing. JPH Skull Art is proud to offer you unique and thought-provoking designs that will enhance any room where it is mounted.

The JPH Standard.

Inspiration.

Each Skull begins with an idea. JPH chooses the style that will fit with the contours and look of each specific skull. Every skull offers a different canvas for the art and inspiration that will come from it.

Sourcing.

Skulls are sourced from multiple locations in Montana, USA. Each skull is cleaned and bleached prior to JPH obtaining them. All skulls, no matter the animal, are obtained ethically and chosen for their quality and style.

Types of Skulls.

JPH Skull Art uses skulls from many different types of animals. Some of the skulls that have been used include American Bison, Whitetail Deer, Elk, Bear, and Horse. Each animal provides a different look and feel to the art.

Quality.

Each skull is selected for the quality of it. The age, care, and cleaning process can cause the skulls to deteriorate and lose it’s quality. Each skull is inspected and repaired, when needed, so that every skull is used while also maintaining our quality and standard.

Process.

The skulls provide an inspiration based off its curves, voids, and horns. It all starts with a pencil outline on the skull. The carving is done with hand tools and precise drills. After a cleaning, the skulls are then adorned, stained or painted, and finally the trim is applied if the skull calls for it.

The Standard.

Every skull has a JPH Standard. From the inspiration to the final skull, JPH Skull Art maintains quality and style. Some skulls that don’t meet JPH Standards are never thrown away, they are worked on until that skull is done speaking to the artist.

The Artist

Joe Hickey

During his travels throughout Montana, Joe Hickey became intrigued by the art and beauty of Animal Skull Carving. He decided that this beautiful work needed to be shared. JPH Skull Art allows all to experience the beauty of Animal Skull Carving while honoring and respecting the life of the animal. Joe feels this allows him to give back to the community and to the land where the animals once roamed.

His imagination and willingness to experiment with colors and applications, as well as constant trial and error, has resulted in art that is very unique and award winning. He hopes his skulls will allow you to share the love of the animals they represent.

Bringing vision to life.

The process of making a skull isn’t just about art, it’s about the connection to the animal and the beauty it speaks. Each skull portrays its own look and feel when finished. Honoring the animal and art from start to finish.
